Northeastern Pa. | Things are truly different in other parts of the country. Size of your operation and cash on hand is very big too. I have tried to justify storage here for 30 years. About 5 out of the 30 years it would pencil out. Yesterday I went through the numbers again. We got 4.06 avg/bu. for our corn at the mill (50 miles one way) Yesterdays price at the same mill was 4.25. With a difference of .19 there is no way to put storage up for that difference. I priced a 10,000 bu GSI bin a few years ago and it was 50,000 complete with drying fan, stirrer etc.that included pad and electrical hook up. That would be 5.00 a bu. or $1.00/bu. over a 5 year period if you pay cash with no interest. Then add electric and gas to dry and a second handling with augers and your time. you in no way can justify that here. We couldn't even justify a used bin for corn. I look at storage as a quick way to get harvesting done. We did find that at least this year we could justify a bin for beans but not a new bin. With all that being said would I like to have a bin - oh yes It would cut out driving 200 miles everyday at harvest I do wish it was the first thing I did when I started 30 years ago so if you can swing it do it but do it right. | |
