West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | Pretend I know nothing about economics, politics or world trade. Now my neighboring country tells me that they will sell me all the widgets I want to buy, at a fraction of what it would cost me to build them at home, and all they expect in return is money which I can print or borrow more of anytime with virtually no cost, and in spite of me doing that, the rest of the world still wants those dollars so badly that they still keep appreciating in value compared to anyone else's currency.
Now, a politician comes along and pronounces that this is unacceptable, these sellers of goods have to start accepting some product of equal value in return for the widgets they send. So now, instead of manufacturing more debt, I have to work hard and pay with something which has intrinsic value. And realistically, thanks in large part to government, I'm not very efficient at making any products to trade to them, which is why I wanted to buy them from the cheaper source to start with. I really liked getting something for nothing, I'm not very fond of work, especially the hard kind, I've been doing it for a long time with no consequences, and the parties I've been trading with is doing everything they can to extend the arrangement. In fact, I'm thinking that since the rest of the world likes these dollars so much, why should I produce anything except dollars, keep exporting those and live a life of leisure.
I fully understand that running a deficit in any sphere is unsustainable, but if ones looks at a chart of the dollar, no one seems to think that the charade will end anytime soon. If 2+2 still equalled 4, this practice would result in massive inflation and no one would want my dollars, and the whole house of cards would come tumbling down, but in spite of everyone involved knowing that, they continue unconcerned. So why should those of us benefiting be concerned?
I assume everyone reading can tell that I have my tongue firmly in cheek, but please show me the flaws in the logic. |
