SWMN | Garvo we see that a lot at our county fair. They ultrasound all of the beef animals for the carcass contest. It is quite common to see the top placing steers in the show at the bottom of the carcass contest. It is hard to feed for a good carcass and win in the show ring. A couple years ago, the neighbors daughter showed a market dairy steer and placed about 1/3 from the bottom and she had the only dairy steer at the fair, I told her the steer did well since it is still a dairy steer and beating out 1/3 of the beef steers is a success. The biggest driving factor in a carcass contest is rib-eye area and dairy steers struggle in that area (I think hers was an 11.9). | |
