From my experience, staples in hedge posts only work when the posts are fresh cut. I had some older posts that I had to drill pilot holes in so I could use staples. 8 or so years later after the deer had jumped it or tried and got hung up a lot of my staples are gone. I went over it and used 12 gauge soft wire and just wired them on. You can also use a chain saw to cut a shallow cut in the post for the wire to lay in then wire it from the back. I have tried that and decided it was too much work. I just stretch the wires very tight and hold them in place with just the wire.
