+1. Simple answer is think of it like a product key when you purchase software for you computer. When you purchase Microsoft Office or something similar you get a product key. When you purchase an activation from Deere the dealer then is able to get an activation code (product key) by a website when the customer's display serial number is assigned to the customer and a few other steps.
