As a guy who use to buy and raise dairy heifers, the one thing I learned quickly is to buy groups of similar size. The larger the group from the same place , the better. Buy from the grower and not the sale barns is huge plus too. As far as feeding them out, they are less efficient , and take more feed than the beef breeds to get to finished weight.
