Northeast ND | I was working on some budgets this morning. If I assume I will store the grain and deliver in March 2018, I figure I can price right now for about $5.10 cash. Corn delivered in March '18 would be about $3.30. At those price levels, corn doesn't look any better than wheat on my less productive ground. On the best ground, corn will outdo the wheat, but otherwise wheat has a solid place on my farm.
My question to you guys that say you need $5.75-$6 for wheat, what are you figuring for a corn price in your budgets? Or are your corn yields that much better. 5 year average corn yield for me is around 125, wheat close to 60.
I believe in rotation on my farm, so I don't really compare wheat to soybeans. As an edible bean grower as well, the wheat has a lot of value in rotation.
