Subject: economic stimuli??... or fool's gold?

I think John Boehner summed it up well...

We are either going to borrow from our Grandchildren.. China.. the Saudi's or print the money to somehow come up with another $825 Billion for such worthy projects as deemed necessary by this Congress... For all the banter about a major rebuild of infrastructure and a transition away from imported Oil.. out of the 825 Billion they have a WHOPPING...

$30 Billion for highways and another $10 billion for mass transit and rail.

"Oh my God!" Boehner exclaimed as he reacted to the size of the proposed program.
"My notes here say that I'm supposed to say I'm disappointed. I can't believe what I'm seeing," he said. Boehner also noted that Democrats prepared the legislation "with no Republican input at all."

Wow... I mean are you kidding? That will hardly pave a new road/rail system in Disneyland more or less much of the rest of the country.. This is on the order of what they think FDR did...???

"The measure calls for $87 billion to help the states meet the rising cost of providing health care for the poor in the recession, and another $39 billion to subsidize coverage by out-of-work wage-earners who cannot afford the cost of their employer-covered health care."

"More than $100 billion is ticketed for education, including money for school districts to shield them from the effects of state cutbacks in services. Democrats also provided tens of billions in spending and tax breaks designed to lessen the nation's dependence on oil as a principal source of energy."

So in other words we are spending money to purchase a couple of giant bandaids just to cover the wounds... nothing that is going to create new jobs or wean us off oil... Hell Bush did more in his ethanol program alone than this.

"The measure does not include money to help middle- to upper-income taxpayers ensnared in the alternative minimum tax, which was originally designed to prevent the extremely wealthy from avoiding payment of taxes but now threatens more than 20 million tax filers. Several officials said the Senate was likely to include that provision in its version of the bill, a step that could push the overall total close to $900 billion.

With unemployment rising, and applications for various forms of federal aid keeping pace, the legislation calls for increased spending on food stamps, unemployment insurance and job training. It also proposes an increase in Pell Grants for college students of $500.

Included is $32 billion to upgrade the nation's electrical distribution system, more than $20 billion in tax cuts to promote the development of alternatives to oil fuels, and billions more to make public housing, federal buildings and modest-income homes more energy efficient."

Yup we are going to winterize some Federal buildings...lol. Wow.

"The reason why I'm becoming increasingly pessimistic is that I see policy makers repeating (willfully) some of the same mistakes of the 30's all over again. Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it."

They are going to give $100 billion to shore up education.. which will probably get transferred into a new permanent dependency.. etc.. the tax cuts go to people who don't pay taxes.. and so forth... I mean if this is what they mean by paybacks... I mean stimuli.. we are so cooked as a country.

I guess this is what I expected... I mean in Kansas.. our wonderful Democratic Gov.. thought that Casino's would lead the way to a new wonderful source of funds to pay the bills in education to teach our kids... Out of the four sites designated... only one is moving forward at this point in time...

Meanwhile as a state we said NO to a TEN BILLION DOLLAR PRIVATE investment in an Oil Refinery as well as NO to a 3.5 Billion Dollar Power plant in Western Kansas... just imagine the jobs and tax revenues that would have been created.... "Oh well."

Casino's in Kansas... yup.. as if we don't have enough private bankruptcies, foreclosures, failed marriages etc... we got to add more to the misery.. Also nevermind that in Las Vegas alone they are already trying to finish another $10 billion dollar casino hotel that will compete with our small casino model here...

"OMG" indeed.
