West central Ohio | Around here I have been seeing more and more steel buildings. Several people I know that have a pole barn decided to build steel for the most recent project. Said the cost gap has narrowed. Two neighbors I know have lumberyard pole barns that are 10 to 12 years old and both said the barns are not holding up as well as they had hoped. Paint is faded a lot on roofs and they need painted. Built by 2 different lumberyards by Amish crews. One lumberyard out of business, so no help there. Said they use cheapest material possible to acheive the low price. Quality of workmanship depends on the foreman and crew.
As far as steel buildings go, seeing Chief, Varco Pruden, Sentinel, Star, and a couple A & B. See quite a few Golden Giant, which are made here in Ohio. Some contractors are buying the building kits and using Amish crews to erect. Key to long life of building is put it on a concrete pony wall. Most around here use a 2' wall. Seeing some pole barns on a foundation or wall. Know of two smaller shops that are stick built on a wall. One is 40' x 50'.
Wind and snow load ratings usually lot higher on steel buildings, but can vary a lot. Need to check to make sure it is rated high enough for your area. We have built a Morton, a Golden Giant, and have a lumberyard pole barn that was on a farm we bought. If I was going to build another today, it would be a Golden Giant if there wasn't a really huge price gap from Morton. We like the cathedral ceiling of a steel building for shop. We have 14' eave height with 17' tall doors and 18' ceiling height clearance the width of door down center of shop.
One of the grain equipment dealers in the area said he would not sell any more Sukup buildngs. He wouldn't give any specifics. | |
