Driftless SW Wisconsin

Eddy,

In my heavy clay soils it works very well. I am not sure about sandier soils. Probably the sandier the soils the more benefit from split application as you may just lose it before the plant needs it. With our system there seems to be no sign of burn when running like this even just ahead of the planter. But a split application is probably better and maybe a must in sandy soils.

If stripping in the spring, minimum time to "gray off" will vary a bit depending on weather conditions. This is where the management comes in. Once the soil "grays off" you can go safely, any clods left will fracture with the planter's Trashwheels and you will get good seed to soil contact. The new swirl basket option among other things gives a finer seedbed in the spring in some soil conditions. The planter seems to want to go down the middle of the strip while the fertilizer is maybe averaging 4 x 4 from the seed.
