Southeast WI | While I AM pretty jaded about donating items at Christmas locally - poor kids here seem to think they are entitled to being given things. Never show their appreciation as gifts are brought in (and somehow they all have iPhones) - I don't expect we would get a written thank you as that's not in any of their teachings, but the way they seem to expect something like this is beyond my comprehension. I was brought up to take care of yourself, save before buying things we can consider toys, etc and always thank people for gifts.
So with that said we DO donate farm products - food products this time of year. I'm not going to waste or dump good squash we haven't sold yet and with the cold weather now it had to go. We have a great local place in Milwaukee called the Hunger Task Force that can take in large donations, sort through them and distribute to many food pantries. They were happy to get 20 bins of squash yesterday as they hadn't seen many in yet, had a failure on their own training farm and people have been asking for squash.
We used to have groups like scouts, 4-H or FFA kids come donate a couple hours for community service to wash squash but those groups just can't be organized very well it seems to come out for one evening. We just have our girls and employees run the product through our produce washer and be done with it. Much easier that way at the end if a long season. Here's a few pics. Happy Holidays to all.
