Subject: RE: Castrating Lambs Question

North Dakota
We sell some rams here. We keep about 50 intact and keep cutting for any reason we don't like them. We will band them up to 100#. Make sure you give them a cdt shot or a tetanus for sure. It is hard on them and will set them back. We get a .10 discount on rams lambs so that $15 a head for a 150#lamb. That can add up. One year we didn't band them for the above reasons and those rams chased the ewe lambs non stop so we felt we'd take the hit on the few bucks and not every ewe lamb. That whole shove their nuts up an band them- they still act like rams and will still chase the ewes, I would think the buyers will frown on you if they figure out who's doing it. On a side note if you can sell some kill lambs off the farm or don't get discounted leave them intact and feed them in a seperate pen. We eat a couple Buck lambs every year and they taste the same as the rest.
