We have had good success by addressing soil nutrional needs with the right soil test and verifying with tissue tests.
There are 17 known, identified nutrients and any one of them deficient or out of balance with another decreases plant health.
C-H-O are the big ones and once you address them, your entire soil structure and resulting plant health changes. That is why we have had so many discussions on drainage and tillage here. These practices greatly affect what the plant is going to see for the 17 nutrients.
That is also why there are so many snake oils out there and farmers and sceptical about a product's performance until it is very well known and accepted. Even then, he is shy to buy!
There are very few fields I deal with that I wouldn't want to change or affect for the plant's health in a positive way. It is all balanced by economics. How much can I afford to effect?
