Two people to blame for that mess. 80% lays with the cow calf producer, no not producer but owner, not vaccinating. Other 20% lays with you willing to buy the cheaper calves that weren't cared for right in the first place.

It's the same deal pawpa and puff do. Take the mistreated, unwormed, unvaccinated, and turn them into something useful.

Will only get worse, cattle producers are only getting older.
Also the cattle business is actually two businesses, one side is the guys that make a living from it, try new things, don't say well daddy it this way and so did his daddy. And the other side is the ones that don't do a thing but get them to the barn.
I was doing the old thin last chance cows and trying to fix others mistakes. Made good money on them but now calves are where I can afford them so that's all I'm doing and hope to stay just in calves.
All sale barn, put togather from several barns, not cut, not weaned, no shots.
