Subject: Re: does gravel dust hurt beans?

I have always felt that in an extended dry period that gravel dust will hurt corn & beans. How much, I can't say but you can see the difference in the health of the plants. Our road use to be gravel & in late Aug I could even see a discoloration in our windbreak trees along the gravel road. Now that the road has been paved I haven't noticed the discolration.

One benifit is that at least the borders of your field is picking up some free lime from the dust. Had a problem a few years ago with some beans & our soil consultant pulled soil samples every 10' starting from the edge of the field . I kind of thought the problem was from road dust but it turns out that the soil tests showed it was a lack of nutrients as you got nearer the field edge from the fertilizer spreader man staying away from the edge. The one thing that did increase as you got closer to the edge was ph. Field hadn't had lime spread for a few years so it had to be from the road dust.
