Ours did the same thing this year and was just barely leaking down. I went to lift auger one more time so I could build a stop for it and the packing blew out. I totally agree with it being a one way cylinder and condensation rust the upper part of barrel. Some folks on here say to cycle the auger all way up and down before storage.
