I would guess that he'd just building subsoil. Or he snuck in there and drilled it to wheat, but I'd bet you'd notice that.

The late fall and early spring are actually some of the most efficient days for water infiltration b/c they don't lose nearly as much to evaporation, which is a pretty big issue with flood irrigation.

Or he's just pumping it to use 100% of his water rights b/c he's afraid they might take them away if he doesn't use them.

And in winter with the saturated soil you get some pretty impressive heaving when the weather makes you go brrrrrrr.
