Central Kansas | If you don't have equipment but need a little hay....then I think you should keep this neighbor satisfied, maybe not happy but satisfied. Normally when a landowner plants, sprays, and oversees alfalfa with his own money, the renter gets 60%, the owner 40% and the renter pays 60% of the weevil treatment which is an annual deal. The landowner gets all the government payment. If the renter has put out the crop, etc. the more typical 1/3 : 2/3rds is appropriate. Since you describe a custom hay deal and not a rental of the land, 50:50 would be the minimum where your neighbor could make it work and you could sweeten that up by helping pick up the bales...or help move his share to his yard, etc. Otherwise.....he might actually require more of a 60% share as others have described the costs. You might just ask him what he thinks would be fair for the coming year....if he sets the deal and you both can live with it, you are far ahead of the 'game'. Good luck. | |
