When it comes to shaking hands with men or women, take into consideration the fact that many are people are afflicted with arthritis and a firm handshake will definitely hurt them. I try to gauge the pressure that the other person is giving and respond appropriately.  Having many family members that do have arthritis, I see many people that will only nod their head and am comfortable with that.
