I agree with Illinois Steve on taking the train. I live 50 miles NW of Chicago and always take the train from Crystal Lake. You could probably get on in Elgin. Drove in once on a Sunday thinking it wouldn't be as bad and still took me 2 1/2 hours to get home. It shouldn't be horrible if you go in at the right time. Be prepared for protesters in the city.
