they can work, but you'll have to your equipment supplier what you have planned, for a regular ground feed designed system will be troublesome if it even works.

as far as the distribution dilemma, cut the same sized holes all the way along the tube, and then get some feed tube material(lighter weight, easier to work with)  cut chunks out of it 4'' long, then split the chunks, they will wrap around the auger tube.

you are using it to close off the holes the appropriate amount, put a wrap of duct tape around them, and now you have a cheap, durable, adjustable, hole shutoff.
