Subject: RE: costs since I was a kid

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois

First car a new 1961 Volkswagen that costs $1,500.  College cost $75 per quarter, three quarters in a year, went one summer.  Got a scholarship and only had to pay $40.  Room rent in off campus housing for $6 per week.  Bought two burgers, fries, and a chocolate shake for under a dollar for lunch many times.  All expenses including books first year was $1,200, worked weekends hauling canned milk for $12 per day plus summers to pay for it.  Worked as a carpenter helper for $1.75 an hour, thought was big wage considering all the time spent baling hay for $1.00 per day.  Got laid off and next day got a factory job for $2.25 per hour, what a great improvement.  Stopped smoking cigarettes when they went to a quarter a pack.  Bought a lot of gas for a quarter a gallon, was shocked when I visited St. Louis and it was 36 cents.
I could go on and on, but nobody wants to hear an old man rant.
