Sorry to hear about Belle. Cars have ended many good dogs.
Docking tails is purely cosmetic, should be outlawed along with ear cropping. Dewclaw removal has a bit of practical reason behind it. Some dogs get there dew claws caught which is painful, honestly do not think it needs done either.

Male or female is a purely personal choice unless you are going to have a dog that works. Then there are lines which one sex seems to be more talented, easier to work... than the other. Intact males may tend to go looking for girls. Either sex stays healthier if they are pets and fixed - less cancers, fewer potential problems.

Most men seem to choose females. I find my female Border Collies are more independent/determined to do things their way and the boys are easier going
