Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | I started first grade in 1965. Lunch was $1.00/week. The next year it went to $1.25/week. By the time I graduated it was $0.50/day. During elementary school we got 3 "recesses" per day, morning, noon, and afternoon. During the last recess you could go to the lunch room and buy a half pint of chocolate milk for $0.03. I remember gas at the country store where we sometimes shopped was $0.25/gallon for regular and $0.30 for premium. Don't remember the price of diesel. Sometimes went to town with Dad and there was a welding shop that had a Coke machine that sold the small bottles for a nickle. The old trolly car diner would sell you a burger, fries, and a 12 oz. bottle of Coke for about $0.50. My brother started his first job in 1964 and was making $1.00/hour (minimum wage) working in a furniture factory. By the way, I'm 57 but I still think I can do what I could do when I was 20 (well, maybe 27). |
