We planted lots of them based on the research (and the promotion programs that accompanied them)
When the were relatively small they seemed to catch snow, reduce topsoil blowing etc etc.
Now that they are much taller, they steal much more light and water -- they seem to be a net loss rather than a net gain.
We've done a much better job catching snow and reducing erosion with reduced and no-till practices.
And they told us that cedars would not damage tile drains. They were way wrong about that too.
What seemed like a good idea when they made it to the 4 to 6 foot heights is clearly a bad idea when they are over 15' high.
