I always use the clutch to put it in the starting gear, and to take it out of gear, into park, and ALWAYS 7th to 8th(On the 8 speed). I never use the top of the lever, i just use the rail like skipper does. i do this on both an 8 speed 4640 and a 15 speed 4960.
