Earlier this year, after a lot of prodding by MS and my declining the update from 8.1 to 10, my computer automatically started updating. I shut off the power to my computer in the early part of the update. After that I didn't receive any more updated notices and still have 8.1, which I use Classic Shell to keep the 7 "feel".
