She is out $1700.
The check will be bad.
They forge the check several different ways. One way is to make a good check, make a copy of it, send the copy, it 'clears' the bank, then the good check is cashed and the bank's all go 'whoa' and claw back the bad check....... That takes extra time to sort out at the banks and moms check is cashed for cash and gone.
