Subject: RE: Other have it right for the most part

Iowa
Plowboy is right on rear-end---4010 heft. Plowboy is right on 3020 comparison--only the 3 pt is from 3020.( Clutch is 4020.) Almost completely console 4020 otherwise. Syncronizers only missing between fwd and rev. In other words, the syncronizers are there between 2nd and 5th and so forth.

They aren't all the same, but they are for the most part a console 4020('69-72), which means: keyed shut off, square intake manifold, redesigned block and pistons, console hydraulics, hyd-engaging PTO, 12V with alt, oval muffler, redesigned dash with different gauges and idiot lights. The 69's were all pretty much the same with very few options. Deere found that customers wanted more choices, and by 71 and72 you could doll them up quite a bit, but the main differences below remained.

The main differences are: 4010-heft axles, usually 16.6X34 rubber with 4010-heft cast wheels, no "ribs" on rims to change the offset of wheels to rims, different speed-hour meter, no fiber-optic dash lighting, 2 headlights instead of four, 3020-pt with no crank to adjust length--just turnbuckle-style, usually no precleaner above the hood, no mid PTO, no 1000 rpm shaft stored sideways in main case above pto shield, (all that I know of accept the 1000 shaft) uncovered batteries, usually no either injector, no sheet metal under seat/above outlets and no toolbox under seat, no syncro between fwd and reverse.

when a 4020 weighed 8555#, a "similar" 4000 weighed 7610#

I am probably missing something(s).

I'd take a 4000 over a pre-69 4020 in a heartbeat. I have put 11,000 hrs on my 1972 4000D. Never overhauled, uses a qt of oil in 75 hrs easy work. Never been inside trans or rear end. 3 clutches, 3 injector pumps, on second hyd pump, 3 or 4 water pumps, 2 radiator repairs, 2 or 3 load and depth "bars" and seals, several pto seals, alternators and starters a few times, not much else. Best tractor I have ever had. Ground 25 tons of feed a week for 30 years.
