Yes it will keep in a bulk bag. That's how we handle all of our fertilizer. You also need a plastic liner in the bag which is about the thickness of vapor barrier.
It's better to store them inside if you can, but we've left them outside for well over a year without problems. You might get a little caking but not much.
That's not really a factor in the spreader we use, but I could see where it might be in some spreaders... but the short answer is that it does work.

We handle the bags with pallet forks on either the skid steer or tractor.
