I have been thinking of doing the same thing with the same size generator. All you need to do is pull off the gear drive in the front of the generator and hook it direct. You may want to put some form of clutch in between engine and generator. I think proper rpm is 1800. I was thinking a good motor would be Cummins out of a old dodge pickup it would be more than needed but it should be reasonably priced. Let me know what you find out or if more is needed to accomplish it,
Before even starting on this deal, make sure yours is a 4 pole field generator (1800 rpm). If you have a two pole field generator, you will need to spin it 3600 rpm, tough with a small gasoline engine and near impossible with a diesel.
Also, the front generator bearing may be unsealed on the gearbox/chain case side, so you will need to replace it with a sealed bearing. |
