It ranges from 10% to 80% depending on ........ a lot of things. Average around 25%. Hospitals seem to have fixed rates (10-25%) whiled doctors seem to be willing to negotiate down more.

If your fix can be done in a doctors office, then that is the cheapest place to get it done. Tell the doctor that you are self-insured and it will be cash payment. Ask them to "tweek" the coding to bring the cost down. And get a cash discount on top of that. If your doctor won't play along, look for one that does.

Get a quote before the procedure from hospitals in your area. I've heard of people actually traveling out of state to get a better deal on procedures at hospitals that specialize in serving cash patients.

If all else fails, you can hire an attorney to negotiate the bill down, assuming it is large enough so that the attorney can make money and you can save money. There are also some companies out there that are offering this service: http://www.medicalcostadvocate.com (I do not have any experience with this company,,,, just using it as an example)
