I would consider Steamboat. All the resorts on I-70 (Vail, Winter Park, Loveland, A-Basin, Breakenridge) are SO SO SO busy. I'm only 2 hours from those resorts and never go. All ski resorts are expensive! Its just part of the deal anymore. Steamboat is a nice, small town, and its much more secluded from everyone. The other nice part of Steamboat is all the other activities you can do there. You can easily snowmobile one day, there are natural hot springs, ice climbing, the Bridgestone winter drive school is there (pretty much go mess around in a nice car in the snow). A few breweries, tubing hills, snowshoes, etc. After that if you guys want a little more main stream activities Denver is only a few hours away. Steamboat is much more family oriented then the other reports mentioned on here. If any of this interests you or you have more questions send me a email and we can chat. I have spent a lot of time over the years there.
