I am absolutely serious with this comment - DO NOT GO OVER CHRISTMAS! With kids that age and being first timers you will hate it because of the huge crowds, ski school will be packed and Colorado has gotten horribly expensive. We haven't been back in 10 years and we skied Colorado many times twice a winter in the 90's. Usually a week trip and then a 3-4 day trip. Great mountains and resorts all over but godawful expensive.

Over Christmas we go to Whitefish on Amtrak. Last year we waited in line for a lift 7 min at the longest. Real resort, real town, real inexpensive. Great brew pub in the great northern. We stayed in town and drove to the mountain. They have a free snow bus so really didn't need a car.

Caveat, you aren't driving to whitefish.

If you are going to Colorado go the week or two after Christmas break in January. That's when we always went. Everyone is relaxed and friendly and grateful the crowds are gone. Kids miss school but so what. Lots of memories to be made!
