Iowa
If the engine is still runable, add water/coolant; use radiator pressure tester and put 15 psi on cooling system when cold and look for external leaks, first. Next, release pressure, reinstall radiator cap, run engine until warm/hot (like 200 degrees F), Shutoff, add 15 psi back into the cooling system, quickly drain hot oil into a pan, remove oil pan and oil sump.(Becareful, everything is HOT) Next, start looking up around the bottom of cylinder liners for coolant drops=(head gasket fire ring blown towards a cylinder), look around cam lobes for coolant drops=(head gasket blown towards cam area), look for coolant drops area right side off the front cover area=(water pump weep hole is plugged and water pump seal is failing and thus the coolant gets into the front cover and down into the oil). Note if you see nothing the first 1/2-1 hour, lay cardboard underneath engine and let the engine cool off overnight, BUT still leave on the 15 psi pressure until morning. Next morning, look at cardboard for wet spots that ARE NOT oily, and also look under engine for coolant drops, again. NOW, IF nothing has showed up yet, release the 15 psi pressure(or whatever is left from overnight), put down new cardboard and let set for 4-8 hours w/o pressure=Could be a COLD water leak. This is the procedure we use, You only get one try, so just don't pull engine's oil pan WHEN COLD, UNLESS you know the leak is SO BAD, that the radiator won't hold pressure. It does sound like the head may be cracked also. Question? Does the engine, when running, blow coolant out off the radiator overflow hose constantly? If so, then the head gasket is blown or cracked head and you might as well pull the cylinder head off. Is the yellow CAT paint burnt on the cylinder head, by the exhaust, up around the head bolts? If so, It really got hot (without coolant in the head) Good luck
