Taking temps of sick calves give you a baseline of where that calf is at that point of time. My temp curve is 101 to 102 normal. 103 temp gray zone and treatment based on visual assessment. 104 temp and above IV/Im treatment. Use colored chalk to id temp and antibiotic used. Next day take temps on 104 and above from previous day. If temp hasn't dropped switch antibiotic protocol. It is not uncommon in a recently vaccinated group of cattle to have visually normal healthy cattle that run temps ( 103 to 104). Vaccines stimulate the immune system and this alone causes a moderate increase in temp plus all of the other stress challenges. What I'm trying to say is taking temps is a tool to use plus overall visual assessment(eating or not, head demeanor, nasal drainage, cough, diarrhea etc). I would rather treat a calf with a 106 temp that looks tough than a calf that has 99 temp that looks tough all day long!
