Subject: RE: Manual vs Self-catch headgates

+1

I have a for-most chute with a manual headgate and a palp cage on it. I never have a problem catching an animal when working alone. Just leave the headgate open far enough for the cow to get her head through and drop the back gate when she walks in the chute. Then once they're in there they're usually trying to back out, but just open the headgate a little wider to bait her back into sticking her head in and lock her in.

It's not as fast as an automatic I suppose, but the only time I'm using it this way is for single animal problems. When I'm running the whole herd, I don't do that alone anyway.
