Subject: RE: Preg testing Older cows ?

We preg checked the other week and had a couple surprise open cows we were not expecting after we had a 100% preg check last year. We always give our bull a BSE before breeding season so pretty sure he was not the reason. One of the opens unfortunately was our best cow who would have turned 10 next year and another cow that would turn 6 next year and both were in pretty good condition and should have bred back. We had a couple cows we were going to cull regardless that came up open that didn't surprise us they were open so including them we came out about 80% which our vet said was right in line with what he has been seeing with other herds in our area and some guys were having even worse luck than that. Our weaning weights were down about 50-100lbs on average from last year and cows weighed at least 100 lbs lighter too which he also said he's seeing a lot of the same on his visits. While we had plenty of rain and pasture this year we also had some prolonged hot streaks that paired with our fesuce summer pasture really took a toll on the cows and we probably should have early weaned to give the cows some relief. We were going to need to make some cuts this year to get our numbers down but preg checking wound up making a few of those decisions for us.
