Faunsdale, AL | When I was practicing in the mountains of SW Virginia and neighboring areas of Tennessee. In the late '80's, farmers still expected that any dehorning would be finished off with an application of pine tar. I am sure that was a holdover from the days when there were screw worms.
I submitted some maggots to be checked out after seeing some really aggressive 'fly strike" on an animal. They reported back it was maggots of a common blow fly, not Cochliamya hominovorax.
My dad's generation dealt with Texas cattle fever (spread by ticks), screw worms, Brucellosis and TB. He always said the guys that complained about the vets tracing down reactors and quarantining herds had never been through an abortion storm! | |
