When I started I bought old cows and grazed rye for a few months and sold them in spring. Then I bought old cows and got some pregnant and kept them and sold opens. Then I bought old cows and got more pregnant and sold bred and opens.

With the changing market I have a feeling even the old bred cows will be slaughter cows so not much return on the program. This time around I am sorting all the smooth mouth cows out. Here we have a special slaughter only sale Christmas week which is the only sale in that 2 weeks (Christmas and new years) in the region and usually real good prices.

I am going to try a strategy to put these cows on a 60 day feed program. And probably buy more. After a little research, my target is 5# corn screenings + 5# ddg and green grass for 60 days. I think that will add up OK. Right now I am at about 12.5% salt, and 44% corn/ddg. I'm not sure the consumption on that, but hoping close to 10#/hd/day. That shows a gain of 2.8# per day in Cowculator.

I will probably keep adding thin cows I can get below 30 cents as I am doing the work anyhow and I think the return will be pretty good on them, especially the big frame cows.I need to cut up a second feeder, as this one is cut too low and only holds about 300# of feed before it pours out sides. At 10# per day that is too much filling up.

I have been hand feeding 5# ddg per day also, so I have some figuring to do.
