| Yes. Good book. I am homeschooling a young girl who is into hunting. Generally speaking, any book before 1965, maybe 1970 is good. the new books are about viewing animals instead of hunting. The newer ranch books are about saving animals from slaughter or auction. The older ranch books are true to life. Some of the older outdoor books have very intense stories of animal conflict. There was one collection of short stories of a young boy fending off a bobcat with a pocket knife (he was holed up and the cat tried to come in). Another, either Hashknife Cowboy or Dakota Cowboy, a man grabs a sleeping bobcat by the scruff of the neck and very quickly realizes what a mistake that was. Others have men crawling into wolf dens to pull the cubs out. Crazy stuff I'd never do. My favorite is The Youngest Drover about a cattle drive out of Canada during a cold winter and the train ride with them to Chicago and all that happens there. | |
