That is the problem here schools get their grubby little hands in the gas tax just like every other tax. WY raised gas tax promising increased road work but failed to mention that only the first few months of income went to roads then teachers unions got their way and a majority goes to more and more lavish schools. There is plenty of money being taken from everyone for roads just needs to actually be allocated to what everyone uses and needs not to the vocal minority crying about the children every fiscal year. Well over 80%, maybe even 90%, of my property taxes go to schools one way or another as well. I am fairly certain a kid could learn just as well in a fancy Million dollar Morton building as they could a $100 million dollar stone taj mahal. I won't go into lifetime defined benefit retirement for 50 year old teachers who only work 9 months of the year in the first place.
Wyoming has a teacher retirement at 50? My wife will not be able to retire until 67 in Illinois. As for 9 months, my wife works more in 9 months of teaching hour wise than most farmers, or business professionals do in a year and a half. She gets home at 6 and grades papers till 9-10 and often is up at 4 to be into school to get ready for the day by 5:30-6am. Usually she meets with students over her lunch to help them with things they dont understand, often helping students that are in other classes than her own but know she can better explain material than other teachers. She teaches physics and could make twice the money in the private sector, but enjoys teaching. I dont think teachers are to blame when it comes to roads, too much administration maybe but most average teachers do not deserve the blame.
I also believe the comments often said about 9 months to be inaccurate, it is meant to sound like everyone else works 12 months. Her father worked for a factory and had 5 weeks vacation every year, they were given the week of Christmas-New Year off. This means my wife really only has a couple more weeks vacation than he did and hers is fixed, while he would take every Friday off during duck hunting season and take a couple week long vacations throughout the year when he was tired of working. He made more money than my wife could ever dream of making as a teacher with only a high school diploma.
Sorry for the rant, just dont like all the blame laid at teachers feet. Education budgets are bloated but the average teacher across the country does not deserve the abuse many lay at their feet. Seriously though does Wyoming allow retirement at 50 if so we may be moving.
