Driftless SW Wisconsin

York,

I would not recommend putting any 28% N in the furrow with the seed. This can cause serious seed damage.

I assume you are talking about planting corn (mais) for silage. The most important nutrient for early root growth is P. Many growers here especially in cooler climates like yours, apply up to 6 US gallons per acre of 10-34-0 in furrow. This seems to be the maximum safe level on 30" (75 cm) rows. There are some specialty, low-salt fertilizers that claim to be able to apply more but for generic 10-34-0 or similar fertilizers, 5 to 6 gallons per acre (uniformly split to each row!) is the safe limit.

If you are using a Kinze on 15" rows you can double the rate to 12 to 14 US gallons per acre since the limiting factor is the amount of fertilizer per linear foot of row.

You could apply 5 gal/a of 10-34-0 in furrow with the seed firmer and then dribble 28% on the surface off the back of the row unit somehow. Better yet, order the planter with the Kinze heavy duty single disk fertilizer coulters up front, our Trashwheels on the row unit, our Curvetine closing wheels for your wet soils and put all the N you want 2" x 2" or 3" x 2" from the seed in a complete one pass system. The Curvetine may be a critical item for your soils in Germany. Best of luck.
