You can use an NH3 rated tank for LP but you cannot use a tank designed for LP to store nh3 because the ammonia pressures will exceed LP pressures. When switching trailers to LP you must either Empty the tank, fill with water, drain and let dry, or drain completely and hook some sort of aeration fan to evacuate the nh3. When switching back to nh3 from LP you just need to vent the tank completely to atmospheric pressure then vapor the tank up with ammonia and fill. The reason there are differences in design of the tanks, take a semi transport for instance. since LP doesn't require 350# tanks, they use a tank that has thinner bulkheads and barrels so they don't carry all the unnecessary weight in steel and can carry more LP. These are mostly found as transport or bobtail tanks than as a storage tank or nurse trailer. but there IS a difference. the only way to KNOW if it's safe is to look at the data plate on the tank.
