Your never going to get rid of the 'dark' stain. Maybe its the old finish like varnish darking it.

stripping it with a sander is a bad idea. Unless you own a sandpaper factory.

Chemical strippi,g is in your future. Wipe on,,, let stand,,,,,scrape off. When you think you have done it enough coats and your done,,,,do it 10 more times. After stripping comes sanding,,,and you still need lots of paper as it fills fast.

Lots of choices for finishes. My mother was a fan of "tung oil". Old varnish used to get sticky when it got hot.

Painting would be my LAST option If this has drawers it adds greatly to the task. Takes hundreds of hours to do right.

One other option,,,if you can find a local furniture refinisher,,is ask how much and if possible to have them dunk it in their tank of chemical stripper...that would take most of the hard work out.
