I guess all seed has been "improved" to pretty much just give one ear per stalk? When I graduated HS seed corn was about $60 / bag and most stalks had 2 and even 3 ears on some stalks. And they were nice LONG ears.. Dad always planted 19,000 per acre... Maybe I'm just being negative but the seed companies have really figured the game out.. I hate all the extra residue left after harvest too. It just doesn't make sense to me to get one beer can length ear of corn off a stalk that is 13+ft. tall... Last year I planted at 34,000, this year I cut back to 30,000 and the ears are a little longer but we've had more rain too...
