Are you familiar with the way threads on this site work and the way replies are posted? My post was in response to someone who had replied to your original post. I had an $800,000 insurance claim and I was using the mechanics of that as an example of how self insuring is risky. We are on a group plan and it is damn good insurance. The premiums are reasonable and we pay them with a smile. We have racked up another half million dollars in claims since the $800,000. Why would I want to tap into my retirement or sell a farm when I can buy insurance instead? We have paid in less than $125,000 in premiums over the past 15 years on this plan. I don't know the total amount of claims we have had but it is well north of $2 million. Yeah you're right, insurance is for suckers. Self insurance is the way to go. I hope it works out for you.
