Subject: Re: rolling baskets

"Do they pack if the soil is a bit sticky? TIA" Get into some wet ground & you'll spend a couple hours digging the mud out of one. It's a;sp amassing how certain size rocks will get into the baskets & you'll pund till you're blue in the face to get them out.

We have had a coule field cultivators with mounted baskets but now run a pull type. We like the pull type better, that way we only pull it when needed. We found most times with the mounted baskets that if we had to make a second trip over the field it left the ground too fine. They have there pros & cons, you just have to decide what fits your operation best.

BTW, you will still need a harrow on the f.c. to level the soil as the rollng baskets won't. First f.c. we had with a basket (double) had a rod weeder on the back to level the soil. Worked good until you got into weeds which would wrap over the rod leaving trenches in the soil. Took the rod leveler off & the baskets wouldn't level the soil satisfactorily. We ended up extending the baskets farther back & mounting a "hitchhiker harrow between the f.c. & the baskets, did a real nice job.

Best mounted unit we had was aRemlinger with 3 bar spike harrow & basket combo. Worst was a DMI 2bar tine/ rolling basket combo. Bought the DMI one year & replaced it with the Remlinger the next, same DMI f.c. but was like a completely different machine
