Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa | Last winter at the annual high school fund-raising foundation supper and live and silent auction, they auctioned off a puppy that one of the board members had gone to the trouble of going to local humane shelter, picked out a nice puppy, took it home, had it something like 90% housebroke, had twisted some arms and had the local vets check over and start on vaccinations, feed guy contributed some puppy chow, nice collar and leash, etc. Who doesn't love petting a puppy? they showed it all around all evening. Sold for around $400-had a blast watching them sell it-local farmer's dog had just got hit on the highway and was interested, local insurance guy's girl friend fell in love with pup and told him to keep bidding, I don't know who else bid.
After they sold the pup, the evening's moderator confessed that when they had sat around months earlier at the board's planning session, trying to figure out something new to try, and when someone suggested a pup, several board memebers just thought,"yea, sure". but it worked this time, at least. |
