Most crop residues have a wide C:N ratio, which is to say there is much more carbon in those materials than what is equilibrium for stable soil OM. So the microbes feed on the carbohydrates as they are able, releasing CO2 until the C:N narrows to about 10:1. The only affordable carbon source is going to be what you grow on the land, or whatever livestock manure you can buy locally. |
